Terms:
Vaganova: The Vaganova Method is a Russian ballet training system developed by Agrippina Vaganova, blending French, Italian, and Russian techniques. It emphasizes full-body coordination, strength, fluidity, and expressive epaulement. Training follows a gradual progression, ensuring precision, flexibility, and artistry. The Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg has produced legendary dancers like Nureyev, Baryshnikov, and Makarova, making it one of the world’s most influential ballet methods.
Balanchine: The Balanchine Technique is a distinctive ballet style developed by George Balanchine, known for its speed, precision, and athleticism. It emphasizes deep pliés, extreme turnout, elongated lines, and unconventional musicality. Dancers execute fast footwork, expansive port de bras, and off-balance movements that create a dynamic, weightless effect.
Balanchine’s choreography often features open arabesques, heightened extensions, and unexpected angles, breaking from traditional ballet aesthetics. His technique is most closely associated with the New York City Ballet, shaping a distinctly neoclassical approach to ballet performance.
Coup de pied: Coup de pied (French for "neck of the foot" or "cut of the foot") is a ballet term referring to a position where the working foot is placed at the ankle of the supporting leg.
Variations of Coup de Pied:
Coup de Pied Devant – The working foot is in front, with the toes touching the ankle bone.
Coup de Pied Derrière – Position used in tutorial in preparation for attitude. The working foot is behind, with the heel touching the ankle and toes pointing downward.
Sur le Coup de Pied – The foot is wrapped around the ankle, with the toes positioned at the front and the heel at the back.
